The 5 Musts of Modern Web Development
It used to be that any guy with an HTML manual could call himself a Web Developer, but with websites requiring ever more interaction, flexibility, and compliance, it is hard to know what you do and don’t need in a website.
If you’re not sure if your current website is up-to-date, just contact our web development department to see if your site meets the following specs:
1 – Responsive Layout
Responsive Layout means that your website is designed to procedurally change the way it lays out and scales its content based on the size of the screen being used to view it. A responsive website is designed to always look its best whether it is viewed on an old smart-phone, a tablet, a laptop, or a full-sized desktop screen. With just over half of the activity on the internet being mobile browsing, this is one of the most important features to implement on your site if you have not done it already.
2 – UI/UX Optimized
Short for User Interface/ User eXperience, this refers to how easy your site is to navigate for the average user. For example, there are certain conventions that people expect to see such as a “Contact-Us” or a “Support” page. Sites without these things can be much more frustrating and difficult for new visitors to use. Likewise, there are conventions that USED to common that are not anymore. These conventions can date your site and make it look and feel old, even if it is brand new. At CNC we keep track of these trends when helping you layout your site, so whether we are building you a brand new site, or just giving your old one a face lift, we already know it will be a pleasure for your customers to use.
3 – Meta-Data + Organic SEO
With over one-billion websites on the internet and only a handful of major search engines for people to find them, how does one make sure that their website can be found? The key is to tell the search engines how to find you. Anyone who’s ever used Twitter understands how much a well thought out hashtag can drive traffic, well websites are no different. Your site’s meta-data works like a hashtag telling Google, Bing, and Yahoo how to categorize you. Then your Organic SEO does the rest. Read more on SEO here.
4 – Modern Encryption
Do you know the difference between TLS and SSL?
What is 2k encryption, and why is it important?
How can a bad server configuration be used to get around your top-notch encryption methods?
Do you need to know the answer to any of these questions?
If CNC is managing your website’s encryption, you don’t. You just worry about business as usual, and we’ll worry the rest.
5 – WCAG-2 Compliance
WCAG-2 compliance is the international standard for making websites accessible to people with various disorders such as blindness, deafness, etc. In recent years we have seen a number of companies moving certain services to being exclusively available online such as job applications, scheduling, vital instructions, document submissions, etc. While this has been a significant improvement for the convenience of most of us, to the handicap community it can make your business and the services you provide completely inaccessible and open you up to discrimination lawsuits. While WCAG-2 compliance is not yet a legal requirement in the United States, it is expected to become universally required for most websites within the next 3-5 years; so, if you’re planning on building a site, you should take the time now to make sure it will meet this upcoming requirements.
